Treatment for Separation Anxiety

The treatment of choice for separation anxiety is usually a form of psychological therapy known as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT for separation has multiple components which involve both training the child in skills to employ to help them reduce their anxiety, and strategies for the parent to implement to desensitise the child to their fears and encourage independence. In younger children the emphasis tends to be on equipping parents with strategies to overcome the anxiety through interaction with the child. In older children therapy tends to entail the involvement of the child more directly in learning skills to manage their own anxiety.

Where school or preschool are key situations for the expression of separation fears, ideally teachers are involved in implementing strategies to reinforce the child for using appropriate coping strategies and encouraging them for developing independence.
